In the previous post, I shared with you how I came to be needing to try out a new-to-me piece of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) software, and why I needed to.
In this post, I’ll go through some of my experiences as I try it out.
First, you need to know that the website I on which I’m trying out this software is built on WordPress, and HitTail is a plugin for WordPress.
In an earlier post, I told some about The Power of WordPress, and gave a bit of orientation to plugins, which simply extend the functionality of the WordPress platform.
The HitTail plugin provides keyword information and suggestions for any given site. (For an explanation about keywords, please read my previous HitTail post.)
The SITES Tab
I set it to email me suggestions daily, checked the “Google Imports” checkbox, and set the import region to United States.
Most of this I did simply by guesswork, as there was no help or tooltip popup available to explain to me what each of these items meant and did.
I then explored the other tabs on the dashboard: Plan & Usage, Imports, Export, Settings, Payment, and Integration.
The Plan & Usage Tab
This tab shows which plan I am enrolled in, and showed me how many keywords it had recommended for me last month and this month, and how many are projected for this month.
Since I had just gotten stated with this, all these numbers were zero.
The Imports Tab
This tab is a complete puzzle to me. There was no help or guidance evident. Perhaps it will be come more clear as this site gains some history with them.
The Export Tab
This tab seems to export HitTail data to a CSV file, which I can save to my computer or simply open using a spreadsheet. I did this, and the spreadsheet was empty, because there is no data yet.
The Settings Tab
This tab puzzled me at first. Settings for WHAT? My website? Oh, it looks like it’s for my account, although it doesn’t say so.
SUGGESTION: this tab should have a title text at the top saying “ACCOUNT SETTINGS.”
I was able to successfully change a few of my personal settings here, although it would not allow me to save changes until I had filled in the “Password Confirmation” field, even though I DID NOT change my password.
When I updated my settings, the “Password Confirmation” field was empty again, which tells me that any time I want to change ANY setting, I’m going to have to enter my password in that field again.
SUGGESTION: Put the password change capability into a separate tab, so we can change our other data without having to re-enter the password confirmation.
The Integrations Tab
This tab has two elements: WordPress and Basecamp.
It was here I learned that I needed to install the “SEO Keyword Suggestions by HitTail” plugin on my website. I did this and it installed like any other plugin. After installation, it took me to a configuration screen, where it asked for my SiteID, which I remembered seeing on the “Sites” tab of my HitTail dashboard. I retrieved the SiteID and entered it, and so far everything looks good.
As for the Basecamp integration, apparently this is some sort of project and files management SaaS system, but in 15 minutes browsing their website, I was unable to get a clear picture of exactly what they DO. I can tell you a huge list of features, but features for WHAT exactly, well, that’s unclear still. Why do companies / websites automatically assume that everyone else knows what their main business is? It ain’t always the case, Bub. Anyway, whatever this is, HitTail integrates with your account there. If you have one.
What HitTail Does
As for what the HitTail site and plugin actually does, they state it fairly succinctly on their plugin page on the WordPress site: “If you target the keyword suggestions provided by HitTail in just one article or blog post, you are almost guaranteed to rank on the first page for those keywords.”
Those words have convinced me to give HitTail a try.
